The Bass Miami Beach - Art Deco District/South Beach

Located in Miami Beach, the Bass Museum of Art offers a dynamic year-round calendar of contemporary exhibitions. Founded in 1963 when the City of Miami Beach accepted a collection of Renaissance and Baroque works of art from collectors John and Johanna Bass, it opened its doors one year later as the Bass Museum of Art located in the original Miami Beach Library designed in 1930 by Russell Pancoast. In response to a growing audience and expanded educational programs, an addition to the museum, designed by architect Arata Isozak in 2002, doubled the museum's size from 15,000 to 35,000 square feet. The museum opened the Lindemann Family Creativity Center in January 2012, which is home to the IDEA@thebass program of art classes and workshops. As part of the education department, the museum showcases a selection of works from the permanent collection in the Art History Lab. In June 2015, the museum will begin an internal expansion working again with iconic architect Arata Isozaki as design consultant and Architect David Gauld. The new design will increase the museum's programmable space by almost 50 percent within the museum's existing footprint as well as strengthen the museum's commitment to exhibition and educational programming in a responsible and sustainable manner.

Please note: As of May 18, 2015, the Bass Museum of Art galleries will be closed for renovation. Reopening is planned for October 2017. While the galleries are closed, the museum has launched a series of exhibitions, events and programs called bassX in the Miami Beach Regional Library, which is directly across the street from the museum at 227 22nd Street, Miami Beach.
