WorldOut Games Event Information
The World OutGames will take place in Miami from May 26 to June 4, 2017. The event will kick-off in style with an opening ceremony at Lummus Park, which will be transformed into the “Festival Village” for the duration of the games and will feature performances by A-list entertainers and international artists.
The Festival Village will play host to countless vendors and entertainment, and will house two entertainment stages, a women's space, a family area, an adult zone and food and drink options for every palate.
Each evening, the Festival Village will come alive with much fanfare, including dance parties with international DJs, haute pool parties and VIP events where participants can strut their stuff down the red carpet.
And once all the athletic competitions have ended, there will be a closing ceremony. Positioned to be a fantastic celebration, this non-stop party will include headliner entertainment, celebrity appearances and more.
Shining the Spotlight on Human Rights
Competition aside, one of the most important aspects of the World OutGames is the global conference on human rights that accompanies the event.
Taking place at the Miami Beach Convention Center from May 26-29, 2017, the World OutGames Miami Global Conference on Human Rights will bring together some of the top human rights activists, researchers, legal scholars and organizations from around the world.
This conference will address topics pertaining to key issues in the LGBT community, including programing entitled: “Promoting Inclusivity in Sports,” “Health & Wellness,” “Global Social Justice” and more.
History of the World OutGames
First started by the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association (GLISA) in 2006, this 10-day event is open to all participants, regardless of sexual orientation.
The first World OutGames were held in Montreal in 2006 with more than 18,000 participants, making it the largest international sports event at the time to take place in Montreal since the 1976 Summer Olympics.
The games welcomed representatives from 111 countries, including tens of thousands of athletes that competed in the actual games, plus individuals that participated in an international conference on LGBT human rights issues, as well as more than 5,000 volunteers.
Prior to being known as the World OutGames, the “Gay Games” were regarded as the preeminent sporting event for members of the LGBT community. Started in 1980 by Dr. Tom Waddell, the Gay Games built an international legacy of changing cultural, social and political attitudes towards the LGBT community worldwide, while also empowering the masses with the transforming benefits of sports competition. After the formation of the Gay and Lesbian International Sport Association, the WorldOut Games were born.
