More often than not snowbirds, the yearly visitors who winter in South Florida, and other tourists appear to take over. But there are plenty of places that are beloved by locals and won't cost you a fortune.

A good first stop is Lincoln Road, the pedestrian boulevard that runs almost the width of Miami Beach. A farmers' market each Sunday is a weekly meeting point for many locals, and although the area has lost some of its identity to chains, there are plenty of unique restaurants and shops to sample.

The Seaquarium is a boomer itself, in that it opened in 1956 and is still going strong. A recent addition to the park, however, is the Dolphin Odyssey program, which gives the public a chance to get close up with Flipper’s friends and even hitch a ride across a pool on their dorsal fins.
Today, however, when you think of Miami, your initial thought is likely to be of South Beach. Lincoln Road, which 20 years ago was an eyesore with loads of empty storefronts, is now home to outdoor cafes and numerous upscale boutiques.
