South Beach
South Beach the American Riviera is the name for the southern part of Miami Beach. Nicknamed SoBe, South Beach of Florida is known around the world. Even if youve never been to South Beach, chances are you know what it looks like. Its picture-perfect looks have made South Beach in Miami a popular spot for photo shoots and music videos. South Beach also played a prominent role in the Al Pacino film Scarface and the 1980s hit TV series Miami Vice.
Although South Beach is home to a number of attractions, it is perhaps best known for its historic Art Deco district, which dates back to the Depression era, a time when developers began building Art Deco hotels along Collins Avenue and Ocean Drive. Today, the Miami Design Preservation League offers guided tours of the South Beach Art Deco district. Mediterranean Revival and Miami Modern (MiMo) architecture are also found in South Beach. Other South Beach attractions include the Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts, the Miami Beach Convention Center, the Bass Museum of Art and the renowned Miami City Ballet.
South Beach is also known for its shopping, nightlife, beaches and people-watching. Popular South Beach shopping areas include the pedestrians-only Lincoln Road Mall and the Collins Avenue fashion district. The phrase dance till dawn describes South Beach of Florida, where many nightclubs remain open till five oclock in the morning. For outdoor fun, South Beach in Miami offers two miles of white sand beaches as well as South Pointe Park, a quiet spot perfect for watching cruise ships pass by.
Annual South Beach events include the Food Network South Beach Wine & Food Festival, the South Florida Auto Show and Art Basel Miami Beach.
