Eat healthy at one of these Miami restaurants.
Miami is a health-conscious city. With a year-round swimsuit season and an eternal summer climate, residents take serious stock in looking and feeling good at all times. It’s an active town full of joggers along the beach, yoga devotees, and water sports enthusiasts. Sure, the South Beach Diet’s been around for over a decade, but what do citizens of the Magic City really fuel up on to stay in such great shape?
Fortunately, Miami has an abundance of healthy, organic, and natural restaurants to choose from with vegetarian and vegan options. Whether you’re a health food devotee or just want to sample the fare in the land of the beautiful people, here are some great picks around town for healthy eating options that happen to be delicious, too.
Go Go Fresh Food Cafe is a hidden gem on Alton Road with a cult following of South Beach locals who lunch there. With a menu of big (really big) and mini (perfect portion) salads, as well as an extensive selection of homemade empanadas ranging from the traditional steak chimichurri to a more original spicy Thai chicken, you’ve got to go to Go Go! Their super food salad (served mini or big) is made with spinach, quinoa, tomatoes, edamame, broccoli, chickpeas, toasted pumpkin seeds, and golden raisins served with a homemade carrot ginger dressing.
For those who have embraced the vegan and raw food movement, THRIVE on Alton Road is your destination. With an extensive smoothie menu and raw, vegan, organic entrees like cabbage tacos made with nut meat and spaghetti and nut balls made of spaghetti squash and sun-dried tomatoes, your vegan dietary and health needs will be met in spades at this thriving outpost.
When in Miami, sampling the Cuban cuisine is a must. Bernie’s Latin American Cafe on Miami Beach sets itself apart with an organic and natural menu boasting a lot of vegetarian options. Opt for tofu or grilled vegetable tacos, a vegetarian “chix” fajita wrap, or a grilled eggplant sandwich with roasted peppers and Monterrey jack cheese. It’s a healthy, natural take on Cuban and Latin American food.
The Pritikin Longevity Center at Doral Golf Resort & Spa is a leading evidence-based, lifestyle-change health resort. Medically supervised, it is comprised of health exams, educational lectures, and real-world implementation in exercise, nutrition and cooking - and has produced life-changing results since 1975.
One wouldn’t expect to find a haven for authentic Greek food in the heart of Little Havana, but that’s exactly what you get at Barbar Grill on Calle Ocho. Known for its homemade pita (white and wheat), creamy hummus, and delicious falafel, it’s a haven for vegetarians and fans of Middle Eastern cuisine alike.
For vegan delights on Coral Way, look no further than LifeFood Gourmet. Creating inventive, delectable dishes of only raw, organic ingredients, they’ve established a strong following of health nuts looking for a tasty bite. Their menu consists of entrees, pizzas, soups, and salads, along with smoothies, teas, and shakes. A key on the menu helps you select a meal that will benefit different aspects of your body’s wellness, such as digestion, circulation, and the nervous system.
Something for everyone, My Smoothie in Coral Gables has every smoothie under the sun, as well as a deli menu full of healthy options for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. It’s buzzing at lunchtime with people looking for a quick, healthy, and tasty bite.
With its original location on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Pasha’s restaurants can now be found all over the Greater Miami area from Aventura Mall to the University of Miami. Serving healthy Mediterranean food in a fast, friendly setting, Pasha’s is a go-to for a delicious meal that’s light, but also satisfying. Everything on the menu is natural, and there’s no additives, trans fat, or MSG. Popular items include the choban salad with chopped tomatoes and cucumbers (add feta!), falafel wraps, and an assortment of fresh pressed juices and smoothies.
Whether you have a Whole Foods in your hometown or not, paying a visit to the South Beach outpost is worth your while. Stock your fridge with healthy, organic eats, grab a freshly prepared sandwich or sushi roll to go, or create your own lunch out of their extensive salad and hot bar. Whole Foods also has stores in Downtown, Aventura and Coral Gables.
Forget packing on vacation pounds when you travel to Miami. With these great options you’ll look and feel great. Enjoy your time sampling these healthy, delectable selections across the Magic City.
