Tips for Enjoying Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach

Art Basel Miami Beach is recognized as one of the premiere art fairs in the world, bringing with it a spectacular collection of satellite events including special exhibitions, private parties, and a non-stop lineup of music, film, architecture and design happenings. Miami’s visitors and guests alike are already preparing for this year’s cultural fete.

Here are our Ten Tips for Art Basel Week:

  1. Have a plan.

It doesn’t need to be a multi-tab spreadsheet with formulas, but you should have an idea of what fairs, events, galleries, and performances you’d like to attend. Decide on whether you’d like to plan your itinerary via date or category then search accordingly. Paper Mag has already begun their coverage and soon you’ll find detailed lists popping up. You can also hit up your favorite festivals’ web sites.

  2. Park at Midtown.

Regardless of where you’re going, you won’t want to be stuck in traffic. Prepare for walking as Miami’s Wynwood, Midtown, and Design District morph into one huge pedestrian friendly area. And you’re just one causeway from the beach. You might even consider biking.

  3. Dress for day to night.

The good news is that you’ll be caught up in the fun of this cultural behemoth of a week. The bad news? Your casual daytime outfit might not look as cool at 10 p.m. The solution? Think simple but chic.

  4. Prepare for elements.

Yes, it’s not supposed to rain but Mother Nature is known to have a rebellious streak and a sense of humor. Grab a scarf and a small umbrella. And of course, sunglasses are a MUST!

  5. Carry a large bag.

Swag at art fairs? It happens! And you’ll be finding some cool, creative artists from around the globe offering business cards, postcards, prints, bags, toys, and other goodies.

  6. Have cash on hand.

Not all cabs in Miami accept credit cards and neither do all food trucks, so make sure to have extra cash on hand.

  7. Bring a pair of flats.

Remember when we suggested a bag? Well, inside that bag you should throw a comfortable pair of flats. Comfy feet get to see a lot more art.

  8. Stay connected.

Download apps and make sure to charge your phone as you probably won’t find charging stations once you’re out. Basel App and social media will keep you updated

  9. Stay hydrated.

Many a painful moment from hangovers to fatigue can be improved or at the least managed by staying hydrated. Keep water close at hand. At the fair you can buy any kind of drink, cocktails included.

  10.  Go off the beaten path.

As Art Basel enters its 10th edition and the fairs become an annual event, more of us are creating routines. Each year brings at least one new surprise; last year it was the Sanrio tattoo parlor. Make sure to leave time to visit a new venue or two.
