Driving & Traffic Regulations

U.S. law stipulates driving on the right-hand side of the road and passing on the left. Right turns are permitted at red lights unless otherwise indicated by a sign at the intersection. Always proceed with caution and carefully note posted speed limits: 15 miles per hour (mph) in school zones, 30 mph in business or residential areas and 55 mph on most expressways, unless road conditions warrant lower speeds. Florida's Turnpike and certain major expressways are toll roads. All persons riding in an automobile are required to wear seat belts. Children less than five years of age must be fastened securely in government-approved child car seats. Division of Driver Licenses: 305-229-6333. Open Tuesday-Friday 7:30 a.m.-6 p.m. (hours vary by location).

SunPass Electronic Tolling System

What is SunPass?

SunPass is an all-electronic open road tolling system which is used on the Florida Turnpike.  A small, pocket sized device called a "SunPass Portable transponder" or a "SunPass Mini Sticker transponder" is attached to the inside of your car windshield, just below the rearview mirror. The transponder communicates via radio frequency with toll plaza readers/equipment. As the car passes through SunPass equipped lanes, the toll charges are electronically deducted from your prepaid toll account.

How to Use SunPass with Your Own Car

If you are driving your own car, you can purchase a transponder to attach to the inside of your car windshield.  To open a SunPass account and to purchase a transponder, visit www.SunPass.com.

Rental Cars & SunPass

Most major rental car companies now offer their customers the option of including tolls with the credit card used to rent the vehicle. These rental car customers can use Florida's toll roads and not worry about carrying cash or stopping to pay for tolls. They can breeze through the SunPass ONLY, EPASS ONLY and LeeWay ONLY toll lanes throughout Florida. To open a SunPass account, visit www.SunPass.com.

Interstate-95 Northbound Express Lanes

Visitors may choose a faster, more reliable option on I-95 by using the new Northbound I-95 Express lanes. Some facts to know:

• The new Express lanes are variably-priced toll lanes so a SunPass is required to pay - no cash is accepted.

• If you want to use "95 Express", make sure you have a SunPass or that you are in a registered hybrid vehicle, vanpool, or 3+ carpool. If you drive a motorcycle, you can use "95 Express" toll-free.

• At rental car agencies, travelers may obtain a PlatePass® or Pass24® to pay tolls electronically.

• At this time Express lanes are available in the northbound direction only.

• Drivers may enter the lanes from eastbound State Road 112, northbound I-95 just south of SR 112 or from the Northwest 10 Avenue ramps to I-95.

• Once in the lanes:

There is no exit for approximately seven miles to just north of 151 Street.

Do not stop in the Express lanes.

Do not attempt to exit early by driving around or between the plastic poles.
