Florida Jews in Sports

(7/1/2008-2/15/2009) Amazing Miami Attractions -- It is only in modern history that sports became popular and widespread among Jews, who like to brag about their sports heroes. In 1934 Hank Greenberg, the first Jew in the Baseball Hall of Fame, sat out a pennant game to observe Yom Kippur. Sandy Koufax did not pitch in the first game of 1965 World Series on Yom Kippur. Our chests swelled with pride when windsurfer Gal Fridman won Israel’s first-ever gold medal in the 2004 summer Olympics. Right here in Florida, we have our own sports heroes who will be the subject for this exhibition - like JoAnn Mason Parker, who is a pockets billiards U.S. Open champion, Skip Bertman, who coached Miami Beach High School baseball team and NFL Miami Dolphin football player Ed Newman.

Thoughts on Democracy

(7/5/2008-12/8/2008) Thoughts on Democracy is an initiative intended to foster an ongoing dialogue between The Wolfsonian’s graphic and propaganda arts collections and contemporary artists and designers. The museum invited 60 leading artists and designers to create a new graphic design inspired by Norman Rockwell’s 1943 “Four Freedoms” posters, a recent addition to the collection. Rockwell’s images, reproduced by the U.S. Office of War Information for mass dissemination, communicated FDR’s vision of “a world founded upon four essential human freedoms”—Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear.

(9/26/2008-11/9/2008) The artists in Dark Continents invoke and challenge the suggested links between femininity and nature. Referencing historical moments in the work of Gauguin and related artists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the exhibition questions the aesthetics of the “primitive” and “exotic” in modern art through a contemporary lens. Dark Continents includes site-specific installations, large-scale wall murals, paintings, drawings, sculpture, video and collage. Works by Ida Ekblad, Hadassah Emmerich, Naomi Fisher, Elke Krystufek, Marlene McCarty, Claudia and Julia Müller, and Paulina Olowska will be featured.
