The new performing arts center in downtown Miami has a new name – Carnival Center for the Performing Arts – in recognition of two $10 million gifts from Carnival Corporation. The symphony hall will now be named the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall, in honor of the Knight brothers who own the Miami Herald and whose Knight Foundation awarded more than $10 million in grants to the center. The $446 million center is set to open in October 2006 with an all-star musical tribute to Miami produced by Grammy Award winning producer Emilio Estefan. Through January 14, 2007, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida hosts "Miami Beach: America's Tropical Resort," an exhibition that revisits the glamorous story of how a mangrove-covered sandbar was transformed into a year-round playground. Visitors "check in" to a replica of a Modern Miami hotel and explore the beach's early history, advertising, transportation, hotels and motels, recreation, workers and celebrities.
