HOTEL HAPPENINGS


Doral Golf Resort and Spa is undergoing a facelift this summer to maintain the Marriott Resort’s award-winning spa status. Spa salon services, treatments, state-of-the-art fitness center, studios, outdoor pool and locker rooms will continue to be available to guests during the upgrade. The outdoor lap pool and Atrium restaurant will be temporarily closed until all enhancements are complete. The new and improved Spa at Doral will officially reopen October 7, 2006. In addition to the hotel’s multimillion dollar renovation, the new $25 million Legends Ballroom will debut at the end of 2006. The self-contained 60,000- square-foot facility, which features both indoor and outdoor pre-function space, will encompass a state-of-the-art kitchen facility and 24,000-square-foot ballroom, which can be sectioned into 12 break-out rooms. The renowned Blue Monster golf course is also slated to undergo a renovation this summer, with minor modifications to create more consistent playing conditions throughout the year. The Fairmont Turnberry Isle Resort & Club is investing $100 million to enhance and expand the resort’s facilities and amenities. The resort will be "reborn" this December 2006. For more information, visit www.Fairmont.com/Turnberryisle.

Fund-raising continues in an effort to rebuild the Flamingo Lodge, the only facility in Everglades National Park where visitors can spend the night indoors. The lodge has been closed since it was damaged last year by Hurricane Katrina. For more information, visit www.FlamingoLodge.com.

Loews Miami Beach Hotel plans to open its new Elemis Spa in early 2007. The 15,000-square-foot, $11 million spa will feature 15 treatment rooms and a sun deck on the third floor – all the elements necessary for guests to feel as though they are ‘A-list’ celebrities. Mandarin Oriental, Miami, the city’s only AAA Five Diamond hotel and restaurant with an award-winning, holistic spa, is offering airline passengers a “Luxurious Layover” program. Travelers can re-fuel and re-hydrate with one of the hotel’s “First Class Wellness” packages before embarking on their next flight. The Luxurious Layover begins with a personal driver to greet travelers inside the Miami International Airport, which is just eight miles from the hotel. Guests are welcomed at the waterfront spa with refreshing cold towels and calming tea and then escorted to the spa’s heat oasis, which includes a sauna, steam and therapy relaxation area. The therapeutic experience begins as guests receive an invigorating treatment to rebalance and restore. Guests will depart with a healthy spa breakfast or lunch to go and a spa travel kit to continue the restorative experience on their next flight or at home. The Newport Beachside Hotel & Resort unveiled its newly renovated Atlantis Ballroom. Truly a room with a view, the 4,600-square-foot ballroom overlooks the hotel’s tiki hut-lined beach, the Atlantic Ocean and the historic Newport Fishing Pier. The décor compliments the natural surroundings of its South Florida location with tasteful, bright and cheerful interior design themes. Capable of accommodating social functions of up to 350 for a banquet or up to 500 for a reception, the Atlantis can also be utilized for meetings and exhibits in its column- free setting. The 2,300-square-foot pre-function area is the perfect space to welcome and entertain guests and visitors prior to an event. Also overlooking the beach and water, this area is equipped with a state-of-the-art audio visual system with a 61-inch plasma TV and casual seating groupings. The Shelley Hotel recently completed a $3 million renovation including plasma televisions in every room and a new lobby bar. The Chesterfield Hotel just opened Yobe, a yoga studio, which offers private sessions that will soon be included as a hotel amenity. The 80-suite Regent South Beach is slated to open this fall. Its unique architecture, extensive outdoor guest spaces and high standard of service will bring a lively new sense of luxury to an increasingly sophisticated area. With a fresh, kinetic façade, it is the only completely new-build hotel in the Art Deco District since 1980. There are balconies of at least 200 square feet outside every guest room and 700-square-foot rooftop terraces above each of the 27 penthouse suites.
