Director, Corporate Communications

The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking a seasoned Director, Corporate Communications to successfully oversee all official communication for the GMCVB.


This position reports to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) with close engagement with the President and CEO and other Sr. GMCVB Executives.

Job Summary:

The Director of Corporate Communications will develop overall GMCVB strategy to engage local media, government and interlocal partners, community-based organizations and community at large further strengthening stakeholder partnerships by proactive GMCVB corporate efforts and the resulting benefits to broader travel and tourism industry and its benefit to the community. This position is responsible for managing and expanding perceptions using paid and earned media strategies as well as social media platforms and manage internal staff an external agency to help achieve those goals.

Nature of Work:

Work is primarily variably paced with various tasks and is performed in both formal and informal environments. Plans and executes major projects using own initiative. Provides input on the establishment of policies and criteria that affect departmental operations. Mistakes and missed deadlines may result in monetary loss and/or damage to the reputation of the department.

Basic Responsibilities:

  • Engages in long-range community relations planning
  • Conduct consistent outreach and engagement with community-based organizations
  • Prudent fiscal responsibility of communication division budget
  • Committee participation, both in the community and on a departmental basis
  • Creates, submits, and delivers reports to Executive Committee, Board, stakeholders, etc.
  • Makes presentations to staff as well as other audiences on behalf of the Bureau

Principle Accountabilities – Communications:

  1. Works with executive leadership team to strategize on issues related to GMCVB corporate communications initiatives. This includes managing political and tourism industry trends and issues management.
  2. Partners with web and social media teams to ensure alignment of local communication strategy through owned channels.
  3. Manages department budget to ensure maximized efficiencies and keep within budget scope.
  4. Ensures delivery of proactive communication plan for the local industry and all GMCVB stakeholders.
  5. Plays an integral part of the crisis communication team and leads the communication function during major crisis.
  6. Develops media response strategy for topics, prepares statements and briefs spokespeople.
  7. Represents the GMCVB on boards and committees as directed.
  8. Write, edit and/or approve official communication tools such as press releases, corporate statements, CEO quotes, corporate videos, communication newsletters and official corporate letters.
  9. Meets with industry partners, GMCVB members, local government officials and others to discuss media opportunities
  10. Liaison with other Bureau departments, private organizations and Interlocal partners to facilitate Bureau involvement in community events, bids, festivals, etc.
  11. Alongside executive leadership team, create proactive Bureau Corporate Branding strategy
  12. Bureau liaison and contact person for local law enforcement agencies


Moderate out of state and out of country travel required.

Financial Accountability:

Manages a budget of up to $250,000

Additional Duties:

Will work on special projects as directed by the COO.


  • External – interacts with media, politicians, community-based organizations, activists, vendors and clients by means of telephone, written correspondence, other forms of electronic communication and in person.
  • Internal – Confers with staff, up to the COO and CEO for the purpose of obtaining and disseminating information.

Supervision Received:

Work is performed independently conferring with supervisor on major projects only. Initiative required to solve problems.

Supervision Given:

Exempt Staff positions: Approximately 3

Sets performance standards for the division, develop goals, objectives and makes hiring decisions. Also maintains discipline, evaluates the performance of subordinates and recommends salary changes. Authority to recommend corrective action.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Success in this position requires interpersonal skills for frequent interaction with key constituents.
  • Degree in journalism, communications, marketing, public relations, journalism, English or related field; Advanced Degree preferred.
  • Minimum 8-10 years of professional experience in communications, public relations or marketing or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of managerial or leadership experience in managing a communications team and demonstrated ability to lead a team effectively.
  • Intermediate knowledge in Microsoft Office Suite 365, or comparable software programs.
  • Extensive knowledge of and expertise in marketing and public relations campaigns.
  • Solid critical thinking and problem-solving skills and must operate well in a high-stress, fast paced environment.
  • Expert ability to positively act as the face of an organization and oversee the messaging in corporate communications materials.
  • Ability to work cohesively with internal and external customers, corporate management, media, and the larger community.
  • Ability to coordinate efforts of various teams.
  • Superior ability to write in a journalistic style that is customary for corporate and external publications.
