Florida Highwaymen Art Show Beginning in the late 1950s, a group of mostly self-taught African American artists devoted themselves to capturing Floridas natural landscapes. During a time when Black artists were generally focused on figuration and the best way to express themselves in the wake of Jim Crow and the fight for civil rights, they painted windblown palm trees, reflective coastal waters, grassy marshes, crashing ocean waves, and tropical sunsets. A Highwaymen Art Show features art from Alfred Hair, his widow Doretha Hair Truesdell Al Black Sam Newton and his brother Harold Newton, Willie Daniels, John Maynard, Roy McClendon, Robert Butler and James Gipson 60 pieces will be on exhibited and are for sale.
