Overtown Typology: Shotgun Houses, Goodbread Alley, Colorful People

Now - Dec 8, 2019

Structures are the bedrocks which shape people and ideas.

This project will create three vernacular models(12'x20') of shotgun houses on unused space in the historic Overtown neighborhood of Miami. Each house will artistically engage the public on how ideas and environment shape our entire community.

The residential community of Good Bread Alley was repurposed by the construction of I-95, however colorful people resisted, failed and triumphed through ideas and creativity. Here we will tell their stories through art and the public will be able to interact.

Overtown is undergoing redevelopment and losing many of it's icons like artist Purvis Young and Photographer James Forbes, the time to preserve this platform is key to South Florida culture.
