Witness a theatrical dance performance piece that spotlights the gender fluid culture of the Mexico’s Zapotec Muxe’s. In Requiem Por Un Alcavaran, Luka Avendano performs the dance of the Zapotec genderqueer muxe. A local bird, the curlew, whose mating ritual often sacrifices the male for the female, inspires the dance. This performance also takes on related themes such as homophobia and the disappearances of queer and non-gender conforming people in Latin America. Presented as part of this year’s Out in the Tropics Festival, Requiem Por Un Alcavaran will be performed April 8 - 9 at the Centro Cultural Español.
