Haydn String Quartet #2 in Eb major, Op. 33 "Joke" (1781) Shostakovich String Quartet #3 in F major, Op. 73 (1946) Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period. He is considered the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet". Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the Esterhzy family at their remote estate. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to become original." Yet his music circulated widely, and for much of his career he was the most celebrated composer in Europe. The Op. 33 Quartet, nicknamed "Russian," were written in 1781 for a Viennese publisher. Haydn dedicated them to the Grand Duke Paul of Russia and premiered on Christmas Day, 1781, at the Viennese apartment of the Duke's wife, Grand Duchess Maria Feodorovna. At the end of the 4th movement, Haydn implements a joke in this piece. It begins with a grand pause that makes the audience wonder if the piece is over. This is followed by a sudden forte sixteenth note in the beginning of the adagio that shocks the audience. Then the first violin plays the first theme of the opening phrase with rests interrupting the music every two bars. Dmitri Shostakovich (1906-1975) was a Russian composer and pianist. He is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. His music is characterized by sharp contrasts, elements of the grotesque, and ambivalent tonality.
