Explore these notable hotel gems located north of South Beach.

South Beach and its Art Deco District technically end at 23rd Street, but Miami Beach extends for miles beyond that in a stretch known as mid-beach.

Not too long ago, this was a barren, no-man’s land for dining, entertainment and hotels, but that’s changed drastically over the last decade as hoteliers have scooped up prime real estate and refurbished properties to their former mid-century glory.

Read on for the hotels keeping mid-beach sizzling, organized by location from south to north.

Freehand Miami

What started as a pop-up al fresco cocktail lounge has turned into the hippest hostel in the United States, easily. Produced by Sydell Group, the tastemakers behind a string of hits from New York’s Ace and NoMad Hotels to LA’s The Line Hotel, Freehand Miami is a space that both locals and travelers like to call home. The original Broken Shaker cocktail bar is a permanent fixture now mixing up the most creative cocktails in Miami and they’ve expanded their efforts to the newly opened 27 Restaurant. With a focus on Florida flavors, farm fresh ingredients and locally caught seafood dished up in an eclectic, laid back setting, 27 is one of the most buzzed about restaurants of the moment. The private and shared guest rooms are designed by Roman & Williams in a stylish, nautical theme catering to the modern traveler.  28th Street & Indian Creek Drive

Rates start at $116 per night.

    Miami Beach EDITION

A collaboration between Marriott International and hotelier Ian Shcrager, the Miami Beach EDITION is a large-scale “luxury boutique, lifestyle space” as described by Marriott CEO Arne Sorensen. With 294 rooms including 28 over the top luxurious bungalows, the property also features such novel amenities as an ice-skating rink and a four-lane bowling alley adjacent to its Basement nightclub. Celebrated chef Jean Georges Vongerichten helms fine dining restaurant Matador Room with a local interpretation on Spanish tapas, as well as the more casual Market, featuring a raw bar, pizza, pastries and more. With two large pools, the outdoor Tropicale bar and an exquisite spa, the EDITION is the latest in Miami Beach’s lap of luxury lifestyle. 29th Street & Collins Avenue

Rates start at $609 per night.

      The Palms Hotel & Spa

A bastion of tranquility and old Florida charm, The Palms Hotel & Spa places a strong emphasis on health, wellness and environmental awareness. Guests can enjoy this programming by luxuriating at the spa, dining on farm fresh fare at Essensia and even volunteering for a beach cleanup. With a lovely pool, back patio and lawn, The Palms hosts a monthly outdoor yoga class followed by healthy eats by Essensia’s executive chef Julie Frans. Her sustainable, all natural fare features ingredients from an onsite garden and local purveyors that keeps local Miamians coming back for more. 30th Street & Collins Avenue

Rates start at $249 per night.

        Courtyard Cadillac

Not your average Courtyard by Marriott, the Courtyard Cadillac Miami Beach Oceanfront is fresh off a $25 million renovation, which includes a brand new 93-guestroom, LEED-certified tower with modern furnishings inspired by Miami Beach. It also came with a name change, Cadillac, honoring the original Miami Modern property with a total of 356 rooms (one of the largest on the beach), two pools and updated lobby and meeting space. While the Courtyard brand traditionally caters to business travelers, the Courtyard Cadillac has plenty to offer visitors on vacation. 39th Street & Collins Avenue

Rates start at $224 per night.

          Soho Beach House

The modern members only club on Miami Beach offers a couple loopholes for the non-initiated. For a taste of Soho Beach House, you can enjoy a meal at the al fresco Cecconi’s, dishing up fresh Italian classics, or for an all access pass, you can book a hotel room. With amenities like a spa, gym, fitness classes, cinema and multiple restaurants, blend in with Miami’s most stylish and connected citizens and keep your eyes peeled for celebrity sightings as you laze by the pool or beach. 43rd Street & Collins Avenue

Rates start at $275 per night.

            Fontainebleau

The ultimate in Miami Beach glamour isn’t found in South Beach, but 20 blocks north at 44th and Collins. Make your way to the mammoth, white curving façade of the Fontainebleau, one of the prime examples of Miami Modern architecture conceived by the master, Morris Lapidus in 1954. Step into the lobby with its signature bowtie tile floors, the stairway to nowhere and cascading chandeliers, and you’ll be transported to another era—yet, today’s Fontainebleau is thoroughly modern. With some of the best dining destinations in Miami (Stripsteak by Michael Mina, Scarpetta, Hakkasan) and the hottest club (LIV), it’s a funhouse of entertainment. The sprawling poolscape and lavish spa also court those seeking rest and relaxation in a glamorous setting. 44th Street & Collins Avenue

Rates start at $379 per night.

At WunderBar, you’ll be greeted with smiles and the sound of laughter; make sure to try their delicious craft rum cocktails. Grab a bite of homemade soul food at Jules Kitchen, then afterwards, take a stroll into their hidden oasis WunderGarden with its exotic plants and tropical calm. 39th Street & Collins Avenue
