At Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art, this summer is bursting with one-of-a-kind events and experiences, unique exhibitions, and so much more. Since its early beginnings as a single gallery space in 1981, MOCA has evolved into a highlight of the city’s arts and culture scene, getting visitors up-close and personal with the work of contemporary masters and burgeoning artists alike. Whether you’re a frequent visitor to the museum or have yet to explore all that it has to offer, you won’t want to miss the variety of exciting things planned for this summer at MOCA.

Here are the highlights of the 2019 summer schedule at the Museum of Contemporary Art:

Summer Art Camps for Kids

Looking for a unique, educational activity to keep your kids busy this summer? The museum is offering five, two-week summer camp sessions, with programs for children ages 6-12 (Summer Arts Camp) and 11-13 (Dynamic Design). Educational presentations, interactive art sessions, outdoor play, and other planned activities will be provided in a structured schedule. Younger campers will experience a wide variety of art-themed activities, while older campers can explore the elements of design, architecture, and more. Because each session focuses on a different topic, campers are welcome to enroll for multiple sessions. Daily classes run from 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. (Monday through Friday), with extended care available.

The exhibit delves into the vibrant history, politics, religion, music, architecture, art, and literature of the area. Extensive public programming will be offered to complement the exhibit, providing the opportunity to truly absorb the uniquely beautiful Haitian culture.

Jazz at MOCA

On the last Friday of every month, MOCA will be welcoming an exciting line-up of renowned jazz musicians for a free outdoor concert, showcasing their incredible talent and diverse interpretations of jazz. The summer schedule features musicians Leon Foster Thomas (June 28th), John McCormick (July 26th), and Dirty Works (August 30th). In addition to musical performances, the galleries will also be open by donation from 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.

Spark your child’s artistic interests with monthly art classes at MOCA, open to children ages 6 through 12. On the first Saturday of every month, the miniMAKERS will enjoy interactive tours through the various museum exhibitions, learning about the artists and their mediums in two-hour sessions (2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.).

Sunday Stories

For toddlers and young preschoolers, Sunday Stories provides a wonderful opportunity to experience art and literature on the first Sunday of every month (11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.). Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join in the class, which will include a live story time and a hands-on art project in the MOCA Pavilion Gallery. Sunday Stories is free with the price of admission.

MOCA Makers

Get in touch with your inner artist at MOCA Makers, an adult workshop program presented by local artists on the third Saturday of every month. You’ll be able to try your hand at different techniques and styles in hands-on, interactive art classes in the MOCA Pavilion, learning more about contemporary art in a relaxed, social environment.
