With Women’s History Month events happening throughout March and International Women’s Day being celebrated on March 8, it’s a wonderful time to celebrate women all across Greater Miami & Miami Beach. Miami holds the unique distinction of being the only major U.S. city founded by a woman. As legend has it, Julia Tuttle convinced railroad magnate Henry Flagler to extend his rail line and build a hotel in this corner of southeast Florida in 1894, when the northern part of the state was suffering through a deep freeze. She sent an orange blossom from her garden to Flagler in St. Augustine as proof of the area’s ideal subtropical climate. Especially given that chapter in its history, Miami is a great place to celebrate Women’s History Month. Check out the variety of events filling the calendar in March 2023.

Miami-Dade Public Library System Celebrates Women’s History

Multiple Dates

The Miami-Dade Public Library System is celebrating Women’s History Month throughout March at multiple branch locations. The Miami Beach regional branch will host a Meet-and-Greet every Thursday in March featuring role play with a famous woman from history, including Jane Goodall, Rosalind Franklin and Sophie Scholl. At the Northeast Dade-Aventura branch, Martina Mathisen will stage a one-woman performance of The Six Wives of Henry VIII on March 3. They’re also hosting movie screenings at various branch locations, including A League of Their Own in Miami Beach on March 10 and Amelia, a bio-pic about Amelia Earhart, at the North Shore branch on March 25. Groundbreaking playwright Lucas Hnath revisits Henrik Ibsen’s groundbreaking 1879 play “A Doll’s House” with a speculative follow-up set 15 years after heroine Nora leaves her husband and children in pursuit of her own happiness. "A Doll's House, Part 2" is a 2017 Tony-nominated play that reckons with the aftermath of Nora’s decision. It makes its GableStage debut in honor of Women’s History Month.

The New World Symphony’s SoundScape Cinema Series kicks off Women’s History Month with a special screening at 8 p.m. on March 1 of “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis as the leader of an all-female group of warriors in 1800s Africa. Projected on the symphony hall’s 7,000-square-foot exterior wall, it makes for an epic viewing experience under the stars at this beautifully landscaped park.

International Women’s Day Workout at 1 Hotel South Beach

1 Hotel South Beach’s onsite Anatomy gym will lead a workout on the beach with its top female trainers from 5:30-6:45 p.m. on March 8 to celebrate International Women’s Day. The full-body workout will feature a blend of Pilates, HIIT and yoga-inspired moves. Yoga mats and towels will be provided.

Women's Impact Luncheon

The annual Jazz in the Gardens music festival at Hard Rock Stadium celebrates Women’s History Month every year with its Women's Impact Luncheon, this year held from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on March 10. Presented by the City of Miami Gardens, the luncheon features distinguished guest speakers who discuss topics that focus on how women can create happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.

Women Run Wynwood 5K

March 12, 2023

Miami local Grisell Denise Rodriguez founded Women Run Wynwood as a 5K running club and empowerment movement for women. The organization is hosting a special Women’s History Month 5K at 9 a.m. on March 12, starting at Veza Sur Brewing Co. in Wynwood. In addition to a run through the art-splashed neighborhood, the event includes live music, guest speakers and a post-run stretch and meditation session, with a cold beer in hand, all designed for women to connect through community.

As part of the 14th annual Flamenco Festival Miami at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, renowned Flamenco dancer Irene Lozano takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. on March 16 to perform "Las Mujeres Que Habitan en Mi," a tribute to the women who have influenced her life and her art through a unique blend of Flamenco, ballet and modern dance.

Women's Health Fair at Miami Dade College West Campus

March 25, 2023

The Health Channel presents a free Women's Health Fair at Miami Dade College’s West Campus in Doral from 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m. on March 25, with workshops focused on women’s health milestones, including menstruation, pregnancy, breastfeeding and menopause, as well as emotional health. Experts will be on hand to provide cholesterol and diabetes screenings, CPR training and other helpful resources. The fair will also feature healthy cooking demonstrations, kids’ yoga and door prizes.

The de la Cruz Collection is one of the country’s premier private art collections. From 10:30-11:30 a.m. on March 25, they’ll celebrate Women’s History Month with a special program, in conjunction with Art Muse Los Angeles, highlighting women artists in their collection, including Ana Mendieta, Christina Quarles, Laura Owens and Sarah Morris.

Head to the Miami Lakes Hotel On Main for a lively panel discussion from 3-6 p.m. on March 25 on Women in Male-Dominated Professions, in honor of Women’s History Month. Presented by Starks Consulting Firm, the panel will feature female police chiefs and doctors discussing how they’ve thrived in their careers in male-dominated fields. The event will also feature a buffet dinner and networking.
