Women’s History Month is celebrated throughout March in Greater Miami & Miami Beach – offering many ways to note the important contributions women have made in society – in the arts, sciences, politics and more.

History buffs will be intrigued to know that Miami’s destiny was inextricably tied to a woman who is considered the first female founder of a major American city. That woman was Julia Tuttle, who famously attracted Henry Flagler’s railroad to the area. How did she do it? By sending Flagler an orange blossom from her garden after much of the country (even balmy Florida) was covered in frost. Her message was that sunshine and warm weather can always be found in Miami. Tuttle is buried in the City Cemetery in Miami, where many of the city’s founders are interred; HistoryMiami Museum occasionally offers tours of the cemetery.
