The Bass
Arts & Culture
The Bass is Miami Beach’s contemporary art museum, dedicated to connecting international artists and ideas with the city’s diverse audiences. Founded in 1964 through the donation of John and Johanna Bass’s private collection to the City of Miami Beach, the museum occupies a historic 1930s Art Deco building designed by Russell Pancoast—the first public exhibition space for art in South Florida.
Focusing on mid-career and established artists, The Bass presents exhibitions that reflect the city’s global character while integrating disciplines such as design, fashion and architecture. Recent and past exhibitions have featured artists including Erwin Wurm, El Anatsui, Isaac Julien, Eve Sussman and Piotr Uklański, alongside innovative commissions that explore the evolving landscape of contemporary culture.
Education is central to the museum’s mission. Through its IDEAS initiative and partnerships with Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Bass fosters creativity and lifelong learning for visitors of all ages. Its commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility and inclusion guides all programming, ensuring that art remains an open and welcoming space for dialogue and discovery.
Enjoy extended hours during Miami Art Week, from Sunday, November 30 through Sunday, December 7, when The Bass is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Exhibitions on view include Jack Pierson: The Miami Years and Faire Foyer: Sarah Crowner in Dialogue with Etel Adnan, along with new works from the museum’s permanent collection.
The Bass is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums and operates as a nonprofit organization.
The contemporary art museum of Miami Beach is an iconic landmark blending art deco and modern architectural features. The freshly renovated venue is available for private use, offering state-of-the-art event spaces and flexible options to accommodate groups of 10 to 600 for social and corporate gatherings. Ongoing exhibitions of contemporary art reflect the spirit and international character of Miami Beach, setting The Bass apart as a unique and nontraditional venue to keep every guest engaged and entertained."
