From Seed to Smoke: Uncovering Women's Roles in the Cigar Industry
New dates TBD
From: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Explore the untold story of women's contributions to cigar making at The Wolfsonian-FIU on Thursday, May 16. This free event, titled From Seed to Smoke: Uncovering Women's Roles in the Cigar Industry, sheds light on the vital role women have played in tobacco cultivation and cigar production. Serving as a counterpoint, the program coincides with the museum's current installation, Smoke Signals: Cigar Cutters and Masculine Values which delves into the history of cigar cutters and their association with masculinity.
Featured speakers Yvette and Yvonne Rodriguez, founders of Tres Lindas Cubanas Cigars, will share family stories and insights into the experiences of Afro-Cuban women working in the cigar industry. The talk will be moderated by museum educator Susana Perez.
Before the presentation, from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m., curator Lea Nickless will lead a tour of the Smoke Signals exhibition. This event is co-presented with FIU's CasaCuba.
