Germane Barnes: Ukhamba

MOAD presents Germane Barnes: Ukhamba, the second in a series of annual commissioned MOAD Pavilions on view at MDC Wolfson Campus from November 12, 2023 to March 3, 2024 and at the MDC North Campus from March 6 to May 26, 2024. Ukhamba, by artist and architect Germane Barnes, is a ten-foot-tall circular structure with four arched entrances, built of curved wooden elements stacked in horizontal layers.
The installation's construction invites visitors to walk inside and congregate while the surrounding plaza and urban landscape remain visible through the structure. Inspired by Barnes’s time working in South Africa and locally in Miami, Ukhamba reflects on the misappropriation of influences from the African continent by Western architecture. It comprises a pavilion that appears part basket, part traditional breeze wall found in tropical climates.
