What You See At Wynwood Walls

When you visit Wynwood Walls, you’re stepping into the world’s largest outdoor street art museum. There’s plenty to see, with massive murals covering 80,000 square feet, as well as multiple large-scale art installations in between. With the artwork rotating periodically, no two visits to this unique museum are ever the same. Hundreds of world-renowned artists have left their marks on the Wynwood Walls, with styles ranging from whimsical and abstract to hyperrealistic and everything in between.

Within this open-air museum, you’ll also find a garden and a section known as the Wynwood Doors, where artists take to slightly smaller canvases by painting what used to be garage doors. The site has also expanded in recent years to include extensive indoor galleries and art exhibitions.

You’ll find masterpieces from innovators like Aiko, a Tokyo born and raised multimedia artist; Lina Condes, a sculpture artist that uses industrial materials like stainless steel; or Chris Ellis, a legendary graffiti artist who got his start painting trains in the South Bronx in the late ‘70s.

Tips For Visiting

The Wynwood Walls are open daily from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tickets are available online and cost $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (age 65 and over) and $5 for youth between the ages of 6 and 17. Children ages 5 and under can visit for free, but still need to register for a ticket.

These general admission tickets allow you to explore the entire museum at a self-guided pace, but guided tours are also available for those who prefer some expert commentary. Other special packages at Wynwood Walls offer hands-on graffiti classes or buggy tours of the entire art district.

The free city of Miami trolley has a stop near the Wynwood Walls, but for those arriving in their own car, there’s plenty of paid street parking available throughout the neighborhood. To avoid the crowds, the best time to visit is on a weekday morning.

Photo Op Moments

The Wynwood Walls could easily be considered one giant photo studio, with each mural offering a perfectly Instagrammable backdrop. The artwork rotates periodically, but you’re pretty much guaranteed to see the highly photo-worthy work of Ron English, who has portrayed a muscular, Hulk-like baby in his work at the Wynwood Walls, whether as a painting or a massive statue. You’ll definitely want to strike a pose with his masterpieces.

Beyond The Walls – Exploring Wynwood Neighborhood

After spending some time at the Wynwood Walls, be sure to explore the rest of Wynwood. The artsy vibes continue throughout the neighborhood, featuring streets lined with murals and creative graffiti.

Art aficionados will definitely want to poke into several of the 70-plus galleries scattered throughout Wynwood, like the Oliver Cole Gallery known for contemporary and pop art or Aliona Ortega Fine Art, which showcases international artists working with a wide range of mediums.

Shopping in Wynwood is also a unique experience, with plenty of independent boutiques offering everything from locally made jewelry and handcrafted home goods to limited-edition streetwear and touristy souvenir shirts.

Wynwood’s eclectic food scene is worth exploring, whether you’re in the mood for classic Greek dishes at DOYA or an Asian-inspired meal at KYU. For coffee lovers, Panther Coffee is a Wynwood staple, serving expertly roasted beans in a cozy, industrial-chic space, while nearby breweries like Wynwood Brewing Co. and Veza Sur Brewing Co. offer locally crafted beers with laid-back vibes. For those with a sweet tooth, the gourmet doughnuts at The Salty are a must, as well as the irresistible pies at Fireman Derek’s Bake Shop.

Wynwood always offers a vibrant atmosphere, but it especially comes to life during exciting events like Art Basel Miami Beach’s satellite shows, Wynwood Pride in June and Wynwood Art Walk, which takes place on the second Saturday of every month, featuring food trucks, open galleries and live music.

The Story Behind Wynwood Walls

Wynwood’s transformation into one of the world’s most celebrated arts districts can be traced back to the vision of Tony Goldman, a developer and arts advocate known for revitalizing SoHo in New York and Miami’s South Beach. In the early 2000s, Goldman saw untapped potential in Wynwood’s neglected warehouses and industrial spaces, so he focused his company, Goldman Properties, on creating an open-air gallery that would celebrate the power of street art.

That vision came to life in 2009 during Art Basel with the launch of Wynwood Walls. What began as just a few painted walls has grown into the dynamic outdoor museum we know today, featuring the work of over 100 artists from more than 20 countries.

Wynwood Walls ushered in the rebirth of the neighborhood, from an aging and neglected industrial area to a haven for art and culture. The project also helped establish street art as a respected form of contemporary expression. Now, there’s street art everywhere you look in Wynwood, with the Walls still serving as the neighborhood’s focal point and a global platform for urban artists that carries on Goldman’s legacy.
