Miami is home to all major car rental companies making it easy to explore every nook and cranny

Miami is a driver's dream.

There is so much to see from South Miami all the way to Sunny Isles, you won't be disappointed. The Magic City is home to all major car rental companies making it very easy for you to whip out GoogleMaps and plan the road trip you’ve been daydreaming about while sitting in on endless back-to-back business meetings. Here are a few insider tips about car rentals in Miami to ensure your ride is headache-free.

Renting a Car from MIA

For folks flying in to Miami, it's very easy to rent a car at Miami International Airport. With the MIA Rental Car Center, you can hit the road in no time. Once your flight lands in Miami, grab your bags and hop on the MIA Mover, an elevated train system located on the 3rd level between the Dolphin and Flamingo garages. Use the 3rd level Skyride (moving walks) to access the MIA Mover station.

When choosing a rental car company, it's important to stay informed about all of their policies, especially when it comes to age requirements, car insurance, rental policies and highway tolls. Each company is different, so contact them directly for more information. It's also much easier to make a reservation in advance to make sure you get the exact type of car you want for the trip. You don’t want to be riding around Miami Beach in something that makes you wish you had tinted windows, a headscarf and Jackie O sunglasses.

The following car rental companies are located at the MIA Rental Car Center.

All other car rental companies not listed above will need special transportation to get to, so be sure to contact them when you land. Many will come pick you up right outside the lobby of the Rental Car Center and take you to the rental agency from the airport.

When you're returning your rental car to the airport, make sure you give yourself plenty of time before your flight to fill up the gas tank to avoid refill fees, return the car, and ride the MIA Mover back to the airport from the center.

Tolls in Florida

The State of Florida operates a series of highways that require prepaid tolls, called SunPass, for all vehicles using that section of the road. This toll applies to both locals and visitors. It’s very important for you to ask the rental car company what their policy is when it comes to paying tolls. Sometimes they'll give you a transponder to rent for a daily fee and others will tack on a fee at the end of your trip. Avoid extra costs by researching your preferred rental car agency's toll policy ahead of time.

Tips for Parking in Miami

You will need to pay for parking in most areas of the city. Parking rates vary depending on the neighborhood and how long you plan to park your car. In many areas of town, you can pay via smart phone apps such as PayByPhone or credit card, but some will only accept cash. Savvy tourists will research where they will be visiting ahead of time and plan accordingly, especially when going to an event.

The City of Miami Beach manages parking in South Beach and surrounding neighborhoods. Watch carefully for signs that will let you know whether street parking is for residents only or available to the public. The easiest way to pay for parking in Miami Beach is to download the ParkMobile app. We also recommend using ParkMe, which will instantly show you where parking spots are available and at what cost.
