Art Events

From its humble beginnings in the early 1960s when Coconut Grove was still a small, tight-knit Bohemian community, the 53rd Annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival has grown to become one of South Florida's most successful and anticipated arts event of the season. President's Day Weekend just isn't complete without a trek through the winding streets of the Grove.

Its popularity is a mainstay because art lovers, foodies, music and festival lovers know it will be a memorable weekend experience. It's the same weekend every year, so it's easy to plan on attending way in advance and because it's at the height of the season, getting a group of friends together (which is the best way to enjoy it) is easy.

The Art

Where else can crowds be exposed to more than 360 artists from around the world in a relaxed outdoor setting? Oftentimes the artists are creating their work as the crowds pass through, so there's a definite chance of watching a sculptor work magic with his hands, an artist paint a canvas or even a woodworker carve his next masterpiece. It's a casual shopper's paradise, a place to meander and buy art for your home or a masterpiece for the discerning collector. Some artists focus on Miami's scenery and well known areas, while others from around the United States bring their own style and flavor to the mix. It makes it the perfect place to discover something new and revel at the wonder of art all around you.

The Food

Oh the food. It's evolved from just a few carnival-like stands serving up hot dogs, burgers, roasted corn and sodas to a culinary experience. There's something for everyone. The festival-type fare is still there for those who crave it, but now local chefs come out for cooking demonstrations and tastings. The food has been elevated to gourmet status, and why not? Coconut Grove has long been known as a culinary mecca and they boast some of Miami's finest chefs. What they're doling out is restaurant-quality noshing goodness. Over at the Global Food Village is where you can dig into the carnival and festival-style favorites that everyone craves.

The Music and Performing Arts

Peacock Park is the Grove's very own waterfront stage. It's where the music happens and during the three-day Arts Festival weekend, plenty of local musicians fill the bill. Miami New Times will once again be providing three days of live entertainment at its main stage in Peacock Park. The musical schedule is jam-packed with an international flavor featuring jazz performers, Latin groups, bands that blend funk/Latin/rap, rock 'n rollers and Caribbean-influenced groups. Among the headliners are Nth Power, The London Souls and Locus Por Juana. That's all on the main stage while at other sites throughout the festival, spaces are set up for intimate dance and theatre presentations from local groups, all adding to the cultural ambiance.

Show Within a Show

Nestled within the abundant art and activity of the Arts Festival is the St. Stephen's Art Show. This intimate smaller "show within a show" features the work of more than 150 artists and is perfectly suited for the younger set. This is where the arts and crafts folks gather to showcase their work. There's also a children's activity area and an international food court. It all takes place amongst the school's massive shade trees, which lend an air of old-time Grove. It's the perfect spot to take a break from the crowds at the festival, yet still enjoy the feel of the arts.

All this wonderful art, food and culture amidst the bayfront backdrop, dotted with sailboats and yachts, makes for wraparound beautiful views-and a fantastic weekend.
