Oct 18, 2024
Starting: 7:00 PM
Unravel the connection between fashion and spirituality.
Join Professor Eziaku Atuama Nwokocha at Books & Books on Friday, October 18 for a deep dive into Vodou practices as explored in her new book, Vodou En Vogue: Fashioning Black Divinities in Haiti and the United States.
Drawing on over a decade of ethnographic research, Nwokocha unveils how fashion and bodily adornment serve as conduits to the divine within Vodou. Her work challenges traditional perspectives on religion, gender and Black identity.
Eziaku Nwokocha is an Assistant Professor at the University of Miami specializing in Africana religions, with a particular focus on Vodou in Haiti and the Haitian diaspora. Her research is informed by gender and sexuality studies, visual and material culture, and Africana Studies.
This free event is co-sponsored by the University of Miami Center for the Humanities. Books will be available for purchase.
