An Evening with Pamela L. Geller & the UM Center for the Humanities
Feb 21, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Explore the complex intersections of science, history and identity as Professor Pamela L. Geller shares insights from her latest work, Becoming Object: The Sociopolitics of the Samuel George Morton Cranial Collection. Presented in partnership with the University of Miami Center for the Humanities, this evening discussion will be held at Books & Books in Coral Gables on Monday, March 24.
Geller’s book critically examines Samuel Morton’s extensive 19th-century cranial collection, highlighting the social and political influences that shaped its creation and affected its legacy. By adopting a biohistoric lens, she explores how Morton’s research influenced perceptions of race, scientific inquiry and human categorization.
Pamela L. Geller is an associate professor of anthropology at the University of Miami with extensive fieldwork experience in Hawaii, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Her academic interests encompass bioarchaeology, feminist and queer studies, identity materiality, and bioethics. More recently, Geller has expanded her focus to the cultural and environmental implications of contemporary materials, notably plastics, in the 21st century.
Admission to this event is free, and copies of Becoming Object will be available for purchase.
