In the Belly of the Bird / Godmother
Oct 09, 2025
From: 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM
A dance-theater work exploring memory, grief and transformation comes to the Miami Beach Regional Library through the artistry of the Pioneer Winter Collective.
In the Belly of the Bird / Godmother takes place Thursday, October 9, presented in partnership with the City of Miami Beach’s OnStage! program. Choreographer Pioneer Winter and a multigenerational ensemble combine original movement, fragments of Isadora Duncan’s works, spoken word, sound collage and community storytelling developed with O, Miami. The piece follows a child’s search for their late mother’s voice—believed to be held within an African Grey parrot—and reflects on what is carried across generations. Sound collaborators include Juraj Kojš, Laurah Merisier and Miami Sound Space, a community choir collective.
Founded by choreographer Pioneer Winter, the collective is a physically integrated and intergenerational dance-theater company that creates performances in public spaces, galleries, stages, schools and film. Its work seeks to expand the definition of what dance can be, centering diverse bodies and experiences so all performers are witnessed, included and celebrated.
