Kilombo: Places of Memory, Resistance and Holding Spaces
This event has passed.
Step into a powerful exploration of resilience and community through the lens of Brazil's historic Kilombos. This evening program titled Kilombo: Places of Memory, Resistance, and Holding Spaces, takes place Thursday, March 13 at The Betsy Hotel.
This free event serves as an activation for the Kilombo exhibition, featuring documentary photography by award-winning photographer and visual anthropologist Maria Daniel Balcazar, on display at The Betsy through March 30.
Through poetry, music and visual imagery, the gathering examines the significance of Kilombos—sanctuaries created by those who escaped enslavement—and how these spaces continue to be maintained by Afro-Brazilian communities despite modern development pressures.
Presented by IPC Art Space as part of their iWitness series, the event highlights connections between global Black experiences, from South America to Miami's own communities. Attendees will engage with artist Darius Daughtry, Founder of Art Prevails Project, and musician Matt Sonata as they respond to Balcazar's compelling photographic documentation of these historic sites of resistance.
