From: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
A landmark retrospective of Colombian artist Olga de Amaral invites viewers to explore six decades of pioneering fiber-based sculpture at ICA Miami. Presented in collaboration with the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, Olga de Amaral runs from May 1 through October 12 at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, and brings together more than 50 works—many shown outside of Colombia for the first time.
The exhibition traces Amaral’s evolution from her 1960s innovations in weaving to large-scale wall pieces and sculptural installations that blur the lines between painting, textile and architecture. Her practice combines materials such as wool, cotton, horsehair, gesso, gold leaf and palladium to create layered, abstract forms inspired by nature, pre-Columbian symbolism and modernist aesthetics. Highlights include the shimmering goldleaf “Estelas” (1996–2018) and the ethereal suspended “Brumas” (2013–2018), presented within an immersive gallery design by acclaimed architect Lina Ghotmeh.
Olga de Amaral was co-curated by Marie Perennès (Fondation Cartier) and Stephanie Seidel (ICA Miami), and follows a widely praised showing in Paris. The installation design reflects Amaral’s own sources of inspiration, evoking a forest-like environment that underscores the organic and material dimensions of her work.
