Reefline: Launch
Oct 21, 2025
Starting: 1:00 PM
Art, science and environmental innovation converge as Miami Beach celebrates the launch of REEFLINE, a first-of-its-kind underwater sculpture park and hybrid reef transforming the city’s shoreline into a living artwork.
The launch event takes place Tuesday, October 21 at 1 p.m. on the beach between 4th and 5th streets, marking the historic first deployment of the project. Attendees will include the Mayor and City Commissioners, along with artists, scientists, cultural leaders and environmental pioneers who have helped bring this visionary initiative to life.
Anchoring the launch is Concrete Coral, an underwater installation by internationally renowned artist Leandro Erlich, featuring 22 life-sized concrete cars arranged in a surreal underwater “traffic jam.” Situated 780 feet offshore and 20 feet below the surface, the installation will soon be seeded with 2,200 corals cultivated in REEFLINE’s Miami Native Coral Lab, using Coral Lok™ technology to promote sustainable reef growth.
Conceived by cultural placemaker Ximena Caminos with a master plan by Shohei Shigematsu/OMA, REEFLINE reimagines coastal resilience through creativity, merging art, ecology and engineering to protect Miami Beach’s marine ecosystems while redefining its cultural landscape. The long-term project will eventually span seven miles of reef, forming a model for coastal cities around the world.
The launch can best be viewed from the beach near 5th Street. Swimming and boating will be restricted in the deployment zone.
