The Night and the Moon
This event has passed.
Experience the intersection of opera and contemporary dance with The Night and the Moon on Sunday, December 15, at Sanctuary of the Arts. This double bill pairs Haydn’s Arianna a Naxos with the choreography La noche y la luna, blending classical music, poetic inspiration and modern movement into a unique performance.
In Arianna a Naxos, Joseph Haydn’s rarely performed opera revisits the myth of Ariadne, abandoned on the island of Naxos after aiding Theseus in defeating the Minotaur. Patricia Arcadí stars in this original production by The Opera Atelier, directed by Daniel Daroca, with contemporary dance choreography by Leyson Ponce. The live performance features Daroca on piano and a staged interpretation of Haydn’s cantata.
La noche y la luna, choreographed by Carmen Werner and Leyson Ponce, draws inspiration from Federico García Lorca’s Gypsy Ballads and the evocative imagery of Edward Hopper’s paintings. This duet explores themes of solitude, relationships and anticipation, set to music by Schubert, Luís Martínez and Simón Díaz. The performance merges gesture, movement and poetry, creating a meditative and expressive space that transcends the stage.
