An Evening with Cris Ascunce, Bethan Marlow & Carolina Vasquez
This event has passed.
Join Books & Books for an author talk with Cris Ascunce on Thursday, June 27. Ascunce will discuss her latest novel, My Best Plan with acclaimed writer and moderator Bethan Marlow and community manager Carolina Vasquez.
Cris Ascunce's novel tells the story of Gene López-Pérez, an architect whose life appears perfect. She has her daughter Susana, her flourishing career and Isa, the love of her life and Susana's biological mother. However, an encounter at a hospital emergency room, where Gene is denied entry due to not being Susana’s biological mother, forces her to confront the limitations imposed on her by societal norms. The narrative delves into Isa's struggles as a pioneering biomedical engineer, balancing her concealed family life with a career endangered by homophobia. As Spain legalizes same-sex marriage, Gene proposes a radical solution to their problems, prompting a poignant exploration of love, rights and family.
Cris Ascunce, a Miami native born to Cuban immigrants, leverages her personal and professional experiences to shed light on LGBTQ+ issues through her writing. Known for her advocacy and her engaging prose, Cris brings a unique perspective to the evening, drawing from her background in graphic design and her life in Miami with her wife of twenty years.
Bethan Marlow, an award-winning writer from Wales, and Carolina Vasquez, a dynamic content creator and community manager, will guide the conversation. Together, they'll delve into the themes of the book, offering insights and fostering thoughtful dialogue. Bethan and Carolina, who are married and reside in Spain with their two children, bring their own experiences to the table.
This event is free, and attendees will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of My Best Plan.
