An Evening With Laurence Leamer
May 09, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Gain insights into the complex relationships between an iconic artist and the women who fueled his creative vision yet often paid a devastating personal price. An Evening With Laurence Leamer takes place on Friday, May 9 at Books & Books in Coral Gables, presented in partnership with The Books & Books Literary Foundation.
The New York Times bestselling author will discuss his latest work, Warhol's Muses: The Artists, Misfits, and Superstars Destroyed by the Factory Fame Machine (G.P. Putnam's Sons, $32). This revealing account examines Andy Warhol's relationships with ten women he designated as his "Superstars" - including Baby Jane Holzer, Edie Sedgwick, Nico and Candy Darling - exploring how he utilized their beauty and talent for his art and social status, often with little regard for their wellbeing.
Leamer's book, named one of "25 Books to Read in 2025" by the Toronto Star, transports readers to the turbulent 1960s Manhattan art scene and the legendary Factory, where casual sex, ubiquitous drugs and wild parties created an environment that permanently altered the lives of many participants. The narrative culminates with the 1968 shooting that transformed Warhol's life and artistic approach.
This free event offers attendees the opportunity to hear from an established biographer whose previous works include Capote's Women, Hitchcock's Blondes and The Kennedy Women. Books will be available for purchase at the venue.
