An Evening with Silvia Cherem
Mar 19, 2025
Starting: 8:00 PM
A renowned Mexican journalist presents her analysis of recent events in the Middle East and their global implications. En Español: Una noche con Silvia Cherem takes place Wednesday, March 19 at Books & Books in Coral Gables. This Spanish-language event features a discussion of her new book Por nuestras libertades (Antes de que sea demasiado tarde) (For Our Freedoms: Before It's Too Late).
The book examines the events of October 7, 2023, when Hamas carried out a devastating attack in southern Israel. The massacre resulted in over 1,240 deaths and hundreds of kidnappings. Through survivor testimonies and historical analysis, the book delves into the broader context of the Arab-Israeli conflict, the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and its global impact. It also highlights the manipulation of public opinion and the spread of antisemitic narratives while advocating for peace and resilience.
Silvia Cherem is an acclaimed journalist and author, recipient of Mexico’s National Journalism Prize in 2005 and a three-time semifinalist for the New Ibero-American Journalism Prize. Recognized for her work in cultural, political and social reporting, she has earned numerous accolades, including the Cultural Institute Mexico-Israel Prize and the 2022 Woman of the Year Award. Cherem’s work has been published extensively in Grupo Reforma newspapers, and she is the co-author of Imágenes de un encuentro: La presencia judía en México durante la primera mitad del siglo XX.
