Discover the rich aviation history of Opa-Locka through a guided bicycle exploration of its storied airfield. Bike Tour Experience at Opa-locka Executive Airport will take place on Saturday, March 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with doors opening at 10:30 a.m.
This two-hour tour provides access to Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport (OPF), an aviation facility established in 1926 by pioneering aviator Glenn Curtiss, who also founded several neighboring communities including Hialeah and Miami Springs. Participants will begin their journey at the restored Opa-locka Historic City Hall, a distinctive three-story structure representing Curtiss's ambitious vision for the themed development of Opa-locka.
The event is a collaborative effort between the Barrington Irving Technical Training School (BITTS), the Opa-locka Preservation Association and the Dade Heritage Trust, offering insights into both the airport's operational significance and its historical context within Miami's development.
Limited to 20 participants, this free experience requires advance registration and personal equipment—all riders must provide their own bicycles and helmets. Participants should arrive 15-30 minutes before the 11 a.m. start time for check-in and orientation. Safety requirements include signing a waiver and wearing appropriate safety gear.
The tour welcomes those under 18 when accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Free parking is available at the venue, located at 777 Sharazad Boulevard.
