This event has passed.
Sustain the Culture presents Black Miami Movie Night at Dear Eleanor in Wynwood on Tuesday, October 29. This evening of archival films and discussions, hosted by local librarian @strangepursuits, focuses on Black communities in Miami and the South, exploring their cultural connections to the land, their fight for social justice and the impact of Black artists. Attendees are encouraged to bring pillows and blankets for comfort while enjoying the screenings. In the spirit of Halloween, attendees are welcome to wear costumes or festive clothes.
The film lineup includes The Creation (1981), a 9-minute clay animation adaptation of James Weldon Johnson's spiritual poem, narrated by James Earl Jones; The Matter with Me (1971), a 19-minute film depicting the struggles of a young Black boy caught between two contrasting worlds in the Coral Gables/Coconut Grove area; and Gullah Tales (1987), a 30-minute exploration of African folklore and the preservation of Gullah culture in Southern Georgia and South Carolina.
Free parking is available at 120 NE 27th St., Miami, with detailed directions provided upon RSVP. Films begin at 7:15 p.m., with discussions interspersed throughout the screenings.
