Carol Jazzar: Anima, Animus

A large-scale installation transforms the Kendall Campus Art Gallery into an immersive study of feminine and masculine archetypes through natural and reclaimed materials. On view October 15 through November 12, Anima, Animus features new site-specific work by Miami-based multidisciplinary artist Carol Jazzar, curated by Ronald Sánchez.

Drawing its title from Carl Jung’s concepts of the anima and animus, the installation surrounds the gallery’s central pillar with an eight-foot-tall octagonal structure. Visitors enter an interior lined with dried sea-grape leaves, while the pillar is clad in reclaimed wood and kraft paper to resemble the trunk of a cabbage palm, Florida’s state tree. The contrasting forms explore ideas of containment, aspiration, balance and the relationship between nature and the psyche.

Materials for the installation are being loaned by Blanco Design + Build and will be reused after the exhibition, making recycling and resourcefulness part of the work itself. Research sketches accompanying the installation offer additional insight into Jazzar’s creative process. Her multidisciplinary practice spans collage, drawing, photography, sculpture, writing and installation, with work held in collections including Pérez Art Museum Miami and Miami-Dade County Art in Public Places.
