Dia de Muertos: Una Ofrenda a la Memoria de Octavio Paz
Oct 31, 2026
From: 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM
An ofrenda honoring Mexican poet, essayist and Nobel laureate Octavio Paz introduces visitors to Día de Muertos traditions at Coral Gables Museum. Presented Saturday, October 31 in collaboration with the Mexican Cultural Institute in Miami, the celebration marks the opening of an altar installation created by Mexican artists Karla Kantorovich and Mónica Czukerberg.
Marigolds, candles, papel picado and symbolic offerings appear alongside books, textiles and references to Paz’s writing. Exploring words, memory and time, the installation connects his literary legacy with the Mexican tradition of honoring deceased loved ones and maintaining bonds across generations.
The artists will introduce the altar and discuss its symbolism before a family celebration in the museum courtyard. Activities include Mexican food and pan de muerto tastings, live instrumental guitar music and a calaveras decorating workshop, where participants can paint and personalize skulls inspired by Día de Muertos imagery. The event welcomes visitors of all ages.
