Hambre
May 15, 2025 - May 29, 2025
weekly on Thursday
Starting: 8:30 PM
Audiences interested in literature, theater and Spanish cultural heritage can experience a unique performance that brings Golden Age texts to life through a contemporary lens.
Hambre, presented as part of the Microtheater on Tour series by El Centro Cultural Español and Books & Books, will be staged on Thursdays—May 15, 22, and 29—at 8:30 p.m. in Coral Gables. This one-act theatrical piece draws from picaresque novels and baroque poetry from Spain’s 16th and 17th centuries, incorporating excerpts from works such as La Pícara Justina, Lazarillo de Tormes and Rinconete y Cortadillo, alongside the words of literary giants like Lope de Vega, Quevedo and Góngora.
Directed and written by Eugenia Sancho, with performances by Betsy Rodríguez, Letty Carmona, Sancho and Verónica Cancio de Grandy, the show explores themes of hunger—not only for sustenance but also for identity, voice and belonging. Through a minimalist and language-driven format, it offers a theatrical reflection on social marginality and human resilience.
The production is part of the ongoing Microtheater program, an initiative originally launched in Madrid that features short-format plays in intimate settings. Since arriving in Miami in 2012, it has become a staple of the local performing arts scene, known for showcasing innovative storytelling in unconventional venues.
