iWitness Lunch Break: The Creole Pig
Oct 10, 2025
From: 12:30 PM to 2:30 PM
A vital part of Haiti’s rural life takes center stage in The Creole Pig: Haiti’s Great Loss, a documentary by filmmaker Dudley Alexis. The film traces the story of the Creole pig, once central to peasant farmers’ livelihoods and the devastating effects of its extermination in the 1980s under a government- and USAID-backed program to combat swine flu. Through interviews with farmers, economists, educators and political analysts, the film explores the economic, political, and cultural fallout of this drastic measure.
The screening is followed by a conversation with Alexis, whose previous work includes Liberty in a Soup and the award-winning When Liberty Burns, moderated by FIU History doctoral student Nyya Toussaint. Part of the iWitness Lunch Break series presented by the FIU Public Humanities Lab, the program includes a complimentary lunch.
iWitness Lunch Break: The Creole Pig takes place Friday, October 10 in Room 102 of SIPA II at FIU’s Modesto A. Maidique Campus.
