Lucy Bull: The Garden of Forking Paths
Dec 04, 2024 - Mar 30, 2025
weekly on Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday
From: 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM
From December 3, 2024, through March 30, 2025, the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami will present Lucy Bull: The Garden of Forking Paths, the first U.S. museum exhibition of Los Angeles–based painter Lucy Bull. Known for her distinctive approach to contemporary abstract painting, Bull’s work explores the boundaries of perception through vibrant colors and dynamic forms. Her paintings blur the line between the macroscopic and microscopic, creating landscapes that shift into internal psychic spaces and challenging viewers to experience an intensified awareness of looking.
The exhibition will feature twenty of Bull’s paintings produced between 2019 and 2024, including recent large-scale horizontal works that stretch over ten feet across, displayed together for the first time. These expansive pieces represent a new direction in Bull’s artistic exploration, complemented by vertical paintings that continue her decade-long investigation into the possibilities of abstract expression.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Bull will also create a stairwell commission for ICA Miami, on view through September 2025, further showcasing her evolving practice. Curated by Gean Moreno, Director of the Art + Research Center at ICA Miami, this exhibition offers insight into the dynamic and ever-transforming world of Lucy Bull’s art. Bull has had solo and two person exhibitions at an array of museums and galleries that include David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles, The Warehouse in Dallas, Long Museum West Bund in Shanghai, the Orange County Museum of Art in California, Pond Society in Shanghai and High Art in Arles, France.
