Menina Auction: Art with Purpose
May 31, 2025
From: 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Witness how contemporary art can directly contribute to a vital cause at an auction featuring reimagined classical sculptures. The Menina Auction: Art With Purpose will take place on Saturday, May 31 at the Coral Gables Museum.
This event is part of the larger Menina Auction Project, an international artistic collaboration initiated by artist Antonio Azzato in Madrid. The project reinterprets Diego Velázquez's painting Las Meninas by transforming figures from the work into large-scale public sculptures, which are then given new artistic expressions by various artists. The initiative has expanded globally since 2018, combining artistic display with philanthropic efforts.
For this Miami iteration, 18 women artists from the Red Thread Art Studio, a collective founded by Aurora Molina, have applied textile-based art to the Menina sculptures. Their work connects traditional craft techniques with contemporary social themes. These sculptures were previously displayed during the Coral Gables Museum's Gallery Night and at the Seville Fair in Miami, where they garnered public interest.
Attendees at the auction will have the opportunity to view these unique artistic creations in an environment that blends art appreciation with community engagement. Guests can enjoy wine and a grazing table while participating in an event where art directly supports a charitable cause. Each sculpture will be auctioned, with all proceeds benefiting the Florida Cancer Specialists Foundation (FCSF). The FCSF provides non-medical financial assistance to adult cancer patients throughout Florida.
