The world premiere of Papier Maché by Carlos Celdrán takes center stage at the Westchester Cultural Arts Center from August 2-4 and 8-11.
Presented by ARCA Images and Miami-Dade County Auditorium, in partnership with the Roxy Theater, Papier Maché delves into the life and artistic struggles of renowned Cuban painter Antonia Eiriz. Eiriz's career flourished during the revolutionary fervor of 1960s Cuba. However, despite her initial success, she faced harsh criticism from cultural institutions who deemed her work overly pessimistic and out of step with the new social order. This ultimately led to her withdrawal from the art scene for over two decades.
The play follows a passionate theater director's quest to bring Antonia Eiriz's story to life on European stages. As he pursues funding and support for his project, the director encounters skepticism and hurdles stemming from ideological, cultural and commercial pressures. The narrative cleverly interweaves the director's efforts with a historical exploration of the events and circumstances surrounding Eiriz's alleged censorship and self-imposed exile.
This performance is part of the Miami-Dade County Auditorium's Away From Home Series, a program that brings live performances to partner venues while the Auditorium undergoes renovations.
