Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1

Pianist Sheng Cai joins the South Florida Symphony Orchestra for a program spanning contemporary American orchestral writing, Romantic virtuosity and 20th-century Russian symphonic music at the New World Center in Miami Beach. Held Friday, November 13, the concert is led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso as part of the orchestra’s 29th season.

Cai is the soloist in Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a cornerstone of the Romantic piano repertoire. The program also features “Cathedrals” from Jennifer Higdon’s All Things Majestic, a work inspired by the scale and grandeur of the natural world, followed after intermission by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 12, “The Year 1917.”

A Canadian pianist who has appeared with orchestras across North America, Europe and Asia, Cai has performed more than 35 concertos ranging from Mozart to contemporary works. Tickets start at $35.
