Una Tarde con Wendy Guerra
Oct 11, 2025
Starting: 7:00 PM
Experience a powerful literary reflection on memory, identity and womanhood in revolutionary Cuba during an evening with Wendy Guerra at Books & Books in Coral Gables.
On Thursday, the acclaimed Cuban author will discuss Everyone Leaves (Todos se van), a novel that traces the emotional journey of a young girl coming of age in 1970s Cuba. Told through intimate diary entries, the story follows Nieve Guerra as she navigates a fractured family life and the ideological pressures of the Castro regime. Based in part on Guerra’s own childhood, the novel offers a haunting portrait of political upheaval and the resilience of women whose lives were shaped and often constrained by the Revolution.
Guerra is a novelist, poet and screenwriter born in Havana, Cuba. A graduate in film directing from the Instituto Superior de Arte, she studied under Nobel Laureate Gabriel García Márquez and has lectured at Princeton University. Her work has earned international acclaim, with translations in more than twenty languages and recognition from the French Ministry of Culture, which named her a Chevalier and later Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. She is the author of several novels and poetry collections, and currently resides in the United States, where she contributes to CNN.
This event will be held in Spanish. Admission is free with RSVP. Books will be available for purchase on-site, and the English edition is also available.
