Weird Miami Tour With Yessica Gispert
Jul 19, 2025
From: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
The fifth installment of the Weird Miami Tour series invites participants on a guided journey through Downtown Miami’s layered histories and urban mythologies. Led by Miami-born visual artist Yessica Gispert, this bus tour—titled A Woman Encased in Concrete—unearths themes of death, rebirth and transformation inspired by a mysterious grave in Miami City Cemetery, where legend tells of a woman sealed in a massive concrete block.
Presented by Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI), the Weird Miami Tour with Yessica Gispert takes place Saturday, July 19, departing from YoungArts. The tour blends personal narrative, collective memory and urban change, inviting participants to experience a city in flux, where remnants of the past are embedded in the ever-evolving present.
Gispert’s artistic practice explores mysticism, loss and ritual through materials such as wax, metal and photographic chemicals. Her work has been shown at institutions including MoMA PS1, the FIU Frost Museum and Museum Abteiberg, and she currently serves as Visiting Associate Professor in Photography at Florida International University. She is also an artist in residence at The Deering Estate.
BFI’s Weird Miami series is known for its artist-led tours that investigate the city’s hidden stories and idiosyncratic spaces through contemporary art.
