Black Hospitality Initiative Scholarship Fund

The Black Hospitality Initiative (BHI), formerly known as the Visitor Industry Human Resource Council (VIC), is a not-for-profit organization that was established as an industry response to the Black Boycott in 1990 to increase and expand African American participation in the Miami-Dade County visitor industry.

Now in its 29th year, the BHI has awarded over 450 scholarships and raised more than $3.5 million in funds and in-kind services. Through the BHI’s efforts, hundreds of African American families have been helped by providing their kids financial aid to assist in attaining a college education. Most of the scholarship awardees were the first members of their families to attend college.

Through the BHI’s partnerships with restaurants, hotels and colleges, many of the students were mentored and given employment opportunities in the visitor industry.

The BHI continues to count on industry involvement to help the many families and kids that remain in need of formal hospitality education and training to ensure our visitor industry remains diverse and inclusive. Industry partners and businesses interested in making a difference are invited to reach out to the CFO at the GMCVB (305) 539-3085.
