Abraham Cruzvillegas: Autocontusión

Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas examines improvisation, displacement and the changing life of cities through a large-scale installation at The Bass in Miami Beach. Abraham Cruzvillegas: Autocontusión, which opened July 16, 2026, remains on view through July 25, 2027. The work expands on the artist’s long-running Autoconstrucción project, which grew from his memories of the self-built neighborhood where he was raised in Mexico City.

Cruzvillegas is known for sculptures, installations, paintings, drawings and videos that explore how people adapt to unstable social, economic and physical conditions. In Autocontusión, he considers cities as places of continual construction and destruction, shaped by political, ecological and economic forces.

Comprising 80 acrylic-painted wood elements arranged in a variable installation, the work also addresses physical displacement and the continual reshaping of identity experienced across diasporic communities. Autocontusión is part of The Bass collection and was gifted by the artist and kurimanzutto.
