Afrotypes and the Anti-Archive: The Conversation

Black visual culture and the ways diasporic memory is preserved, transformed and reimagined come into focus during an annual panel discussion at The ARC in Opa-locka. Presented by Ten North Group on Saturday, December 5, the free program examines the ideas behind Afrotypes and the Anti-Archive through conversation about symbols, memory and representation across the African diaspora.

The discussion considers “Afrotypes” as recurring visual languages, motifs and iconographies that move across cultures and continents, while the idea of the “anti-archive” challenges fixed or definitive narratives of diasporic history. Rather than treating the past as a closed record, the panel explores memory as something fragmented, mobile and continually reshaped through contemporary artistic and cultural practice.
