An Afternoon with Dr. Robin Judd
This event has passed.
Discover the untold stories of Jewish women who found love and hope in the aftermath of World War II through marriages with Allied soldiers. An Afternoon with Dr. Robin Judd takes place on Sunday, March 2 at Books & Books in Coral Gables, presented in partnership with the Holocaust Memorial of Miami Beach.
Drawing from personal connections, including her own grandmother's experience as a Holocaust survivor who married an American soldier, Dr. Judd explores these remarkable unions in her groundbreaking work Between Two Worlds: Jewish War Brides After the Holocaust (University of North Carolina Press). Her research illuminates how these marriages not only offered escape from war-torn Europe but also played a crucial role in rebuilding Jewish communities and shaping postwar society.
Dr. Judd, a Professor at Ohio State University and current President of the Association for Jewish Studies, brings her expertise in Jewish, transnational and gender history to this intimate examination of survival, resilience and new beginnings. Her work captures the complex emotional landscape of these war brides, where newfound joy intertwined with survivor's guilt and the challenges of building a life in an unfamiliar land.
This free event offers attendees the opportunity to delve into this compelling chapter of Jewish history through the lens of these transformative relationships. Books will be available for purchase at the venue.
Dr. Judd's extensive credentials include appointments to Ohio's Holocaust and Genocide Memorial and Education Commission and leadership roles in numerous prestigious academic institutions. Her research has earned recognition through multiple fellowships and grants, including awards from ACLS and the Hadassah Brandeis Institute.
